Description
TM 07 SW WALSHAM LE WILLOWS CROWNLAND ROAD
3/44 Riding Farmhouse
GV II
Farmhouse. Early C17 front range; older fragments in reconstructed rear wing.
Timber-framed and rendered; plaintiles. 2 storeys and attics; 2-cell internal
chimney plan, now with lobby entrance. The internal chimney-stack has 3
octagonal shafts, attached at the heads, on a rectangular base with a recessed
panel which no longer carries a date. Plain bargeboards and spike finials to
the gables. 2 3-light windows to the upper floor, and one central 2-light,
all old casements with plain glass; 3 3-light casements with transomes to the
ground floor, one to a single-storey enclosed and gabled C20 porch with side
entry. To the left of the stack, an open fireplace with curved back and
ovolo-moulded brick arch; main beam with ovolo moulding and lamb's tongue
stops with unusual double groove. To the right of the stack, a timber lintel,
formed from a beam taken from a demolished rear section, bears the spurious
date 1470. 2 fireplaces on the upper floor. Joists to the first floor
ceilings set on edge; roof timbers plastered over. The 1½-storey rear range,
with a chimney-stack set externally on the side wall, includes a massive old
beam, and shows signs of extensive remodelling. It probably incorporates the
earliest part of the building, to which the front section was added. The
present lobby-entrance has been cut through studding on the front wall, and is
clearly secondary.
