4/28 Yew Tree Farmhouse
-- II
Farmhouse. C16, in 2 phases; C18 and C19 alterations. Half-H on plan with
flanking cross-wings set forward; a further wing, probably C18, to left.
Timber framed core, completely encased in C18 red brick, with much chequer
work in dark headers. Plaintiled roof with crest tiles. Shaped bargeboards
with pierced quatrefoils at the feet and spike finials. Mullion and transom
casement windows of late C19 with a single horizontal glazing bar to each
light; flat arches and chamfered reveals. 2-storey canted bay to right hand
wing. Gabled porch in angle of main range and right hand wing: half-glazed 4-
panel door with 4-centre arched head. 2 stacks with late C19 shafts.
Victorianised interior. In the hall a cross-beamed ceiling with multiple
mouldings, continued down the one wall post visible; the cornice was also
moulded. A similar ceiling in the parlour (right wing) has less complex
moulding. Plaster-moulded cross beams in ceiling of parlour chamber, the 4
divisions with simply-moulded borders (one gone). The wallplate in this wing
has small remains of early painted decoration. Left hand wing is slightly
earlier: some heavy first floor studding, a moulded and cambered tie beam and
a queen-post roof. The roof over the remainder of the house has a single row
of wind-braced clasped purlins; the collars have curved braces meeting to form
a shallow arch, the apex of which is integral with the collars, an unusual
refinement. Remains of medieval moated enclosure to east.
