Description

WETHERDEN STOWMARKET ROAD TM 06 SW 4/233 - Barn 20m west of St. Briavels -- II Barn, C16 with alterations of c.1800. 5 bays. Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Glazed pantiled roof, once thatched. A gabled porch with boarded barn doors at centre of north side. A pair of boarded doors in opposite wall. Side walls have heavy arch windbraced studding of C16, widely spaced at centre 3 bays; end bays added in c.1800. Clasped purlin roof of c.1800. Several storey posts and at least 2 tie beams are reused from a barn of early C14 or C13; this building from jointing evidence must have had upper passing braces above tie beam braces, and was also aisled. A number of reused medieval rafters. St. Briavels, formerly known as Martin's Farmhouse, is not included in this list. Listing NGR: TM0097962550
