Description

GIPPING TM 06 SE 5/41 Barn and attached - Cartshed, 50m north of Grange Farmhouse GV II Barn, mid C17; and attached cartshed of early C18. 6-bay barn, the western bay once partitioned off as a stable with hayloft above. At the south side of the central bay is an original porch. Timber-framed, mainly with original tarred plaster cladding. Asbestos-sheeted roof, once thatched. The barn has good framing for date: heavy primary-braced studding with middle rail; at the west gable is evidence for a diamond-mullioned window. Butt-purlin roof. The 4-bay cartshed has arch-braced tie-beams, clasped purlin roof and primary braced studding. All four walls were originaly studded; the removal of studding from the north wall took place in C19 when the building was converted to a cartshed, probably from a stable. There is weatherboarding and a door in the gable of the cartshed, against the end of the earlier barn - in a position where the door is unusable. The cartshed must therefore have been moved bodily from somewhere else. Listing NGR: TM0762464127
