Description
CODDENHAM LOWER road
TM 15 NW
5/30 Barn 40 metres north-west
- of Choppins Hill House
GV
II
Barn, C14 with major alterations principally of early C19. 5 bays, 2 aisles.
Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Roman pantiled roof. Pairs of boarded barn
doors at the centre bay. The south-east arcade and north-east gable are the
most complete features. Each open truss has (or had) square-sectioned tie-beam
braces and passing-braces, the latter rising from the ailes and being tenoned
into the underside of the main tie-beam. The closed truss is similar but has
widely-spaced studwork. The surviving arcade-braces have slight reversed
(convex) curvature. An original arcade-plate scarf joint is splayed within
sallied and under squinted butts. The roof was renewed in C19; it was probably
once of coupled-rafter form. The north-west aisle has some C16/C17 framing,
but much of the building was remodelled in C19. A rare example, particularly
in East Suffolk, of a mediaeval aisled barn; and of further interest because
near-contemporary with its farmhouse.
