Description

DEBENHAM HIGH STREET (east side) TM 16 SE 6/82 Angel Inn 9/12/55 GV II Public house. In 2 C16 sections, that to the right set slightly back. Timber framed, plastered in panels, the left section with a coved eaves cornice. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys. Windows mainly C20 casements. Left section has 2 windows: 4-light casements on upper floor, one with C18 square-leaded glass in 2 lights; ground floor has 5-light windows with transom. To right, 2 3-light first floor casements and a ground floor canted bay. 3 C20 doorways, 2 placed together, all with matching classical doorcases and semi-glazed doors. Carriage entrance to extreme right. Internal stack within left section. Interior. Older part to left, of 2-cell form. Cross-entry in right cell: part of original plank and muntin screen with one 4-centre arched doorway, the spandrels carved on both sides. One ground floor room has chamfered cross- beams, in the other heavy plain joists are exposed. Massive fireplace lintols. At rear of right cell is an original upper gallery with infilled plain balustrading. Some exposed first floor framing. Roof not examined. Built as an inn and known as the Angel in a survey of 1621.
