Description

BACTON COW GREEN TM 06 NE 2/4 Kerry's Farmhouse - II Former farmhouse, C16 and c.1600. 2 storeys and attics. 3-cell plan; the parlour cell is of cross-wing form. Timber-framed and plastered. Roman pantiled roof, once thatched. 2 C19 chimneys of red brick; one axial, the other at left hand gable. C19 and C20 casements; at the side wall of the cross-wing is a chamber window of c.1600 of oriel form, with ovolo-moulded mullions, transome and cill. C19 4-panelled entrance door. A C20 wooden conservatory/porch to left. The parlour block was added c.1600 to an earlier building: high quality close-studding and butt-purlin roof. The main range is in 5 very narrow bays, suggesting major alterations such as the removal of an early chimney. Strongly cambered arch-braced tie-beams of early or mid C16 type, but the wallplates have splayed edge-halved and bridled scarfs of a type used in late C14/early C15, perhaps reused in C16 rebuilding. The house stands near the edge of a partial medieval moat. Listing NGR: TM0543765828
