Description

TL 96 NW THURSTON BARTON ROAD: MILL LANE 1/138 Mill Farmhouse -- II Former farmhouse, late C16. 2 storeys. 2-cell end-chimney plan. Timber- framed and roughcast; much of ground storey walling rebuilt in plastered masonry. Double-Roman pantiled roof, adapted to gambrel form in probably C19; formerly thatched. To left is a C16 external gable chimney of red brick, with vestigial crowstepping; the upper shaft rebuilt in C19. An axial late C18 chimney of red brick. Mid C20 steel small-pane casements. Two C19 panelled entrance doors side-by-side: C20 plaintiled lean-to roofed glazed porch. Unchamfered floor joists laid flat in the hall. Studwork with diamond- mullioned window evidence. Windbraced clasped purlin roof; the rafters have been cut above the purlins and realigned at lower pitch, perhaps c.1800. A windmill formerly stood close by the rear of the house.
