Description
TL 97 SE HEPWORTH THE STREET (WEST SIDE)
3/19 Aspen Hall
II
Farmhouse, formerly called Turnpike Farmhouse. Early C17. 2 storeys and attics: 2-cell lobby-entrance plan. Timber framed and rendered with double Roman tiles. The internal chimney-stack has 4 attached hexagonal shafts with cutwater bases. Two 3-light casement windows with 2 cross-bars to lights to each storey, and a shallow-pitched enclosed gabled porch of c.1900. An early C19 one-and-a-half storey lean-to addition with slate roof along the rear. The room to the south of the stack has an ornate plaster fireplace: arched opening, roll-moulded surround with small modillions and an incised central motif. Main beam has stops with scroll and bar. Joists replaced: the original joists were set on edge, and may have been covered by an ornate plaster ceiling. The stair is in the original position behind the stack and leads up to the first floor and attics. Roof in 7 bays, unrelated to wall bays: 2 rows of unstepped butt purlins with windbraces to upper row.
