Description

TL 97 NE BARNINGHAM BARDWELL ROAD 1/4 Barninghain House 14.7.55 - II Former rectory. Early C19 with older core. White brick; fragments of timber- framing; slate roofs, two-span, and hipped in part. 2 storeys and attics; complex T-shaped form. Various internal chimney-stacks with plain shafts. Range of 4 small-paned sash windows in deep reveals with gauged heads to surrounds; 4 dormers with lead-covered rounded roofs and cheeks. Entrance under a Tuscan portico in the angle between the main range and the south wing: door with 2 3-panelled leaves, partly glazed, below a semi-circular traceried fanlight. Plain mutule cornice. The long south wing is partly brick-faced over timber framing and has C18 features: ornate paired wooden modillion cornice; string-course, and 3 full-height pilasters with Ionic capitals between the windows on the south face. On the west end of the wing, a single- storey semi-circular added bay with a flat roof and 3 small-paned sash windows extending to ground level. At the north end of the house, some old casement windows with square-leaded panes. The interior has remains of a smaller, timber-framed house in the rear of the main range, and the south wing contains mid-C18 features: panelled shutters, and 6-panelled doors embellished with egg-and-dart ornament.
