Description

1 DENSTON Barn to the East of 2006 Denston Hall TL 75 SE 7/758 II GV THE ADDRESS SHALL BE AMENDED TO READ: 1 2006 DENSTON Barn to the West North West of Denston Hall TL 75 SE 7/758 II GV N.B. THE LIST WAS PREVIOUSLY AMENDED IN RESPECT OF THE ABOVE ENTRY ON THE 27TH JUNE 1988 1. DENSTON BARN TO THE EAST OF 2006 DENSTON HALL TL 75 SE 7/758 II GV 2. Barn. Mid to late C16. Timber-framed; the lower half of the walls weatherboarded, the upper part rendered, with panels of old comb-patterned pargetting. Black glazed pantiles. A small timber dovecot attached to the apex of the south gable. Interior with very good framing in 5 bays: close-studding with a middle rail, arched braces halved against the outer face of the studs on the upper floor, and straight tension braces halved against the inner face on the ground floor. Jowls to main posts and shallow arched braces to tie-beams. The building was initially storied throughout, and all the main posts have housings for main ceiling-beams. At the north end 2 bays seem to have been partitioned-off completely by a studded wall, and there is evidence for a former stair, and housings for 2 upper and one lower diamond-mullioned window. In the remaining 3 bays there are diamond-mullioned housings for one upper window, and another opening, now blocked, with evidence for a sill but no housings. Fine roof in 7 bays unrelated to wall-bays: one row of clasped purlins and one of unstepped butt purlins; a pair of arched windbraces to each bay. Although now used as a barn. the original function of the building is not clear. There is no evidence for heating, and the window arrangement, which relates almost entirely to the former upper floor, would not accord with a domestic use. It may well have been used initially as a granary. The high barn entrance into the middle bay appears secondary. A lean-to addition along the south end has clay pantiles. Listing NGR: TL7580552488
