Description

TM 07 NW THELNETHAM WATTISFIELD ROAD 2/89 Dairy Farmhouse II Former farmhouse, converted to 2 cottages in C19, now one house. Late C16 and C17, with C19 front. Timber-framed, with the northern half rendered, and the southern half faced in mid C19 red brick. Double Roman tiles: internal chimney-stack with a plain shaft. one -and-a-half storeys, with the walls heightened later, so that externally it appears to be of 2 storeys, although inside no alteration has been made, and there are 2 layers of roof. There is a slight overhang along the front of the rendered section which marks the line of the older wall-plate. This end has small-paned C20 windows and a reproduction door: the southern end has 2 small- paned sash windows with arched heads to the brick surrounds, and a doorway between: C19 3-light small-paned casements to upper storey. The interior has 4 rooms in a row, divided by the chimney- stack: to the north of the stack the framing is of good quality, with arched braces to the tie-beams of the trusses and arched braces halved against the studs at the corners. The original late C16 house was probably here, with a 2-cell end chimney plan and a single large upper room. In the southern C17 end, one ground floor ceiling has very heavy plain joists and main beams with 3" chamfer, but this does not accord with the rest of the building and seems to come from elsewhere. The remainder of the frame is of poorer quality. Clasped purlin roofs throughout, the northern half of better quality. The house is under restoration, and a number of reused timbers have been introduced. reused timbers have Listing NGR: TM0088176205
