TL 97 NE BARNINGHAM THETFORD ROAD
1/19 Two barns immediately to 2.11.83 the west of Barningham Hall (Formerly listed as Two GV II Barns , North-West of Barningham Hall)
A pair of barns forming part of the complex of farm buildings to the west of Barningham Hall. Early C17 and C18. Timber-framed and weatherboarded with pantiled roofs. The principal barn (early C17) is aligned north-south. 5 bays, with a cart entry in the middle bay and a later porch on the west side. To the north of the porch, a lean-to extension along the west wall. The frame stands on a high brick plinth: no middle rail, arched braces at the corners are halved against the studs. Trusses with long arched braces, 2 replaced by bolted knees. Roof in 11 bays, unrelated to wall bays: principal rafters of square section; one row of unstepped butt purlins; one row of clasped purlins; windbraces; later queen-struts. The threshing floor is paved with limestone flags, an unusual feature in Suffolk. Attached to part of the east wall of this barn, forming an L, is a small C18 4-bay barn: primary braces bisecting studs; no middle rail; trusses with long arched braces. Roof in 8 bays, with a ridge-piece, clasped purlins, and queen-struts.
