BARDWELL BOWBECK Lavender Barn (Formerly listed as Two Barns at Johnny's Farm, previously listed with Johnnie's Farmhouse as barn under General)
14.7.55
GV II A pair of barns, set end to end, to the south of Johnny's Farmhouse, and aligned north-south. Early to mid C16. Timber-framed, part weatherboarded, part plastered, but now encased and roofed in corrugated iron sheeting. The northern section was built as a house, but apparently converted to a farm building very soon afterwards. Two storeys: four bays. Several diamond-mullioned windows, with mullions in situ and shutter-slides above. Roof with diminished principals, one row of unstepped butt purlins, with clasped purlins above. The southernmost bay has had its ceiling removed, and now forms part of the adjoining barn. The roof over this bay collapsed, and has been removed. The southern barn is in four bays, with no middle rail to the wall-framing, and arched braces at the corners. The trusses have long arched braces to the tie-beams. The roof, in eight bays which do not correspond to the wall bays, is of the same type as the adjoining building, but has in addition windbraces in the end bays. The interior framing of these barns still makes them listable in spite of their deteriorating exteriors.
