BURY ST EDMUNDS TL8564SW GUILDHALL STREET 639-1/14/405 (West side) 07/08/52 No.84 (Formerly Listed as: GUILDHALL STREET (West side) Nos.83 AND 84) GV II A pair of houses, now combined and used as offices. Early C19. White brick to front, random flint with red brick dressings to back wall; slate roof with a stone parapet and coping and a stone band below. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, attics and cellars. 4 window range: 12-paned sashes in plain reveals with flat gauged arches to the 1st and 2nd storeys; on the ground storey the lower half of the sashes have plain glass. A stone band runs below the 1st storey window sills and another on the ground storey, at the impost level of the door and window arches. The 1st storey windows extend from floor to ceiling and open on to 4 small rounded cast-iron balconies. On the ground storey, a C20 shop window on the left and a segmental-arched brick surround to the doorway on the right with an inner arch flanked by Tuscan columns, panelled pilasters and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. Door with 6 sunk panels up stone steps. A good rainwater head at each end of the facade. The back wall has 16-pane sashes in flush cased frames to the ground and 1st storeys and there is a mid-C19 rear red brick wing. INTERIOR: the 2 halves of the house are still quite clear: a brick-lined cellar below each half, with the remains of a fireplace on the right. A winder stair on each side with stick balusters, open bracketed strings and wreathed handrails. Panelled inside shutters to the front windows; several fireplaces with reeded surrounds. The unaltered attics, in 2 parallel ranges, have a valley roof between. Listing NGR: TL8523764115
