Site Event/Activity record ESF20651 - Desk-Based Assessment - Land Adjacent to Carsons Drive, Great Cornard

The proposed development area (PDA) is situated on the eastern side of the Stour Valley 1.2km away from the present course of the river on the first area of high ground overlooking the floodplain. There has been metal detecting and fieldwalking activity on the fields comprising the PDA. These searches have identified a large prehistoric flint scatter over approximately 70% of the PDA, a dense scatter of Roman material in the north-eastern quarter of the PDA and a low density scatter of Early Anglo-Saxon material in the same area. Of special note is the material that dates to the early 5th century AD, that is immediately after the Roman army withdrew from Britain and Germanic cultural influences start to be recognised in the material culture. There are very few sites in Suffolk that have been identified as dating to this period, potentially increasing the archaeological importance of this site. These finds suggest there is a high potential for there to be preserved occupation deposits within the PDA for the periods identified as being present.
