Description
ALDERTON (Off) THE STREET TM 34 SW (South Side) 10/8 Alderton Hall 16/3/66 (formerly listed as The Hall) G.V. II Farmhouse. C15 with extensive C19 and C20 additions and alterations. White Flemish bond brick and rendered brick with pantile roof (originally thatched). Two storeys. Entrance front: 5 bays of early/mid C19 white brick. Doorway to left of centre having a projecting porch with fluted columns with bell caps and responds with an entablature and cast iron balcony. Door of 6 panels, the lower 2 flush and the upper 4 raised and fielded. 2-light fanlight above. To right of this and at left are 2-light casement windows with cambered heads and stone sills, 5 similar windows to the first floor. Ridge chimney stack to left of centre and another at far right of the hipped roof. The left hand side is rendered and colour washed with a later projecting portion at left and having four C20 plate glass sash windows to each floor. The left hand side has a massive chimney stack of C17 date to centre, white brickwork to left of this and rendering at right with a 2-light C19 casement window at first floor level. Rear: projecting wing at right replaced in the C20 with a half-hipped gable. To the left flank of this is a lean-to of 2 storeys. To left of this the main range has a 4-light C19 casement window at right with a C19 ground floor lean-to outshut at left of that. To the first floor above this arrangement are two horizontally-sliding sash windows. To left again is a projecting wing with a hipped roof which has a single-light C20 window to left.
Interior: the front parlour has massive, heavily moulded ceiling beams having a triplet of roll mouldings to the underside and deep hollow chamfers to the edges and run-out stops. Further, similar beam now embedded in a dividing wall. Similarly moulded joists between these. C20 fire surround and C19 panelled door. To the first floor room above this room are one massive cross-axial cambered beam which is joined at its centre by two axial beams all supported in jowled wall posts. Further massive jowled wall posts and chamfered ceiling beams to the ground and first floors in the remainder of this range which is of 2 1/2-bays with a massive late C16 or early C17 chimney stack to the half bay which would appear to have been adapted from a full bay to accommodate the chimney.
