Description
ALDERTON (Off) THE STREET TM 34 SW (South Side) 10/9 Farmbuilding c.5 yards 16/3/66 north west of Alderton Hall (formerly listed as Farm Building at Alderton Hall Farm) G.V. II Farmbuilding. C17 or earlier. Rubble flint with ashlar and brick dressing and a pantile roof. Two storeys. Yard front: cambered-headed opening at right with stable door. Square-headed opening at left with a wooden lintel and a loft door to the first floor at right set in a brick surround, as is the stable door directly below. To right of this is a single-storey range of buildings which are not included as part of this item. The left hand gable end has a diagonal buttress at right which dies back via an ashlar offset and has ashlar quoins above this. To the left at ground floor level is a projecting gabled shed which is not included as part of this item. To the first floor above this are two blocked openings at first floor level and a blocked opening to the gable which has a chamfered ashlar surround. Rear: lean-to outshut of C19 date with catslide roof masking the rear wall.
Interior: chamfered oak ceiling beams to the ground floor. Further, blocked openings showing in the wall. The former function of this building is not clear. It may be a priest's house, or, alternatively a later building using mediaeval stonework taken from the collapsed church tower nearby.
