CHARSFIELD TM 25 NE 5/1 Brook Farmhouse - II
Farmhouse. Late C15 with C16 and C17 additions and alterations. Timber framed with colourwashed render and plain tiled roof. Two storeys. 3-cell plan, originally with open hall. Entrance front: entrance door at left of centre on line with screens passage. Gabled porch in front. To left of this a window of 4 x 3 panes and at right 2 further similar windows and one of 3x3 panes. To first floor are 4 windows of 4 x 4 panes all having a central casement light. To ridge at right is a chimney stack of 2 flues and to left a later 2-flue stack. Righthand gable end has C20 French window at ground floor. First floor window of 3 x 3 panes with central casement and 2-light attic casement. Slightly recessed and at right of this is a C19 or C20 addition. Left hand gable end: ground and first floor windows each of 4 x 3 panes with a central casement. Rear: at right and left are single-storey projecting gabled service additions. To right of these at ground floor level is one window of 4 x 3 panes with central casement and a first floor single-light window. To the centre are one 2- light and one 3-light casements and to the first floor at right is a C19 three-light casement and at left a C16 window of 6 casement lights with diamond-section mullions. To the first floor at left of this is a cross- window and a window of 5-lights with diamond-section mullions. To ground floor at far left is a single-light casement. Interior: C16 chamfered ceiling beams to present sitting room, formed from lower area of the open hall. Joists with broach stops. Present dining room was originally 2 service rooms. Present kitchen probably a C17 addition and originally a parlour with panelling which has moulded muntins and continous cross-rail to 3 walls. Ceiling beam with doubled angle beads and decorative end stops. Plain joists; probably indicating that the ceiling was originally plastered. Baffle-entry plan inserted with winder staircase at the time of the building of the chimney in the late C16 or early C17. Chamfered ceiling beams and close studding to the first floor rooms and one 4-centred fireplace surround of moulded brick. Open truss with braces forming a 4-centred arch.
