Description
TM 38 SE SPEXHALL CHURCH ROAD
2/21 Glebe Cottage
GV II
Cottage. C17. 2 storeys; 2-cell end chimney plan with later additions. Timber-framed, part plastered, the remainder encased in colour-washed C19 brick. Clay pantiles. 2 3-light cast-iron casement windows to the upper floor, and 2 C20 replacement windows on the ground floor, set into surrounds with segmental arches, with a blocked doorway between them. A C19 brick extension for a stair and hall on the west end also has a blocked doorway. Plain framing, in 3 bays, exposed inside; the original fireplace has a plain timber lintel; some of the ceiling beams are very rough. Roof structure largely concealed. The cottage stands sideways-on to the road, in a corner- to-corner position with The Old House (see preceding item), and it seems likely that it was built as a unit house. It is now separately occupied.
