Full Description

Glebe Cottage is a small C17 two-cell, two-storey, timber-framed cottage, formerly part of The Old House, to which it is attached corner-to-corner. It was likely built as a unit house, a secondary dwelling often built very close to the main earlier house. There is a single store lean-to extension that had been built at its east end by 1884. A further small east extension and a two-storey in-line west extension were built by 1927, then another small east extension by 1975. In the 19th century, prior to or at the same time as the lean-to was constructed, the original cottage was encased in Flemish bond brickwork, although at the east end retaining a rendered chimney bay and gable. It had a central doorway on the south elevation which has since been bricked up and the adjacent ground floor windows have been changed to French windows. The bricks have horizontal imprints which are part of the manufacturing process and help to date the work. It is not known whether the brickwork was limewashed originally. Internally, the building retains historic fabric and features, including exposed timber framing and wide plank doors with hand-forged strap hinges and latches. The first floor appears relatively intact, although with later partitions and having lost part of its historic purlin-height ceiling. At ground floor level, there have been changes and some re-use of historic timbers. The central open studwork contains many small and large redundantpeg holes, in places aligned (S1).
