MARGARET BROOK LANE TM 38 SE 3/33 Brook Hall. - II Former farmhouse. Late C16 and C18. 2 storeys; T-shaped form. Timber-framed main range, rendered, with some traces of lining; slates. The pitch of the roof was lowered c.1900. An internal chimney-stack with a large plain shaft of light-coloured brick. The principal (garden) front has a 3-window range: some sashes in flush frames with 2 vertical bars to lights, some old 3-light casements with transomes, one on the upper floor with square-leaded panes of old glass. C20 replacement 8-panel door to an enclosed porch with a flat, lead-covered roof. Interior in 6 bays, with chimney bays 3-cell plan; most timbers concealed. Newel stair by stack. To the south-east side of the stack, the ground floor and upper room both have ovolo-moulded main beams with curved stepped stops; to the north-west of the stack, the 3 bays were originally divided into a one-bay heated room and an adjoining 2-bay unheated service area (cf. Burkitt's Farmhouse, Westhall). Main beam with very large chamfer. One upper fireplace has a fine early C19 duck's nest grate. The C18 range, consisting of additional service rooms, is in colour-washed brick with black glazed pantiles, and has an internal chimney-stack. Various 3-light casement windows, one with square leaded-panes. Main beams are deep and narrow; joists of almost square section set on edge. The house stands on a large complete moated site.
