Description
TM 14 SW WHERSTEAD BELSTEAD LANE (north side, off) 1/16 Thorington Hall GV II House. Probably early C16 with C18 and later additions and alterations. Timber- framed with brick gable wall to right, rendered. Plain tile roof. Orange brick stack. 3-bay framed original range with added cross wing to rear and later addition to right replacing earlier structure. Further addition to rear. 2 storeys and attic. cellar to part. Off-centre C20 porch. 3-window front with 20-pane sashes to ground floor plus one small C20 casement to left of door. Small-paned casements to 1st floor. Large external stack to left gable, ridge stack to right. Late C18 - early C19 wing to rear with bow containing 20-pane sashes. Interior: 3 bays of framing of stout scantlings exposed to left section. Ground floor: chamfered jowled posts, deep chamfered beams with tenoned-in joists. Inglenook fireplace with replaced bressumer. C18 corner cupboard with shaped shelves, fluted pilasters and moulded archivolt. First floor: jowled posts and cambered tie beams with arch braces. Wall plate shows edge-halved and bridled scarf joint. End wall of early C16 section to right is studded with tension bracing and shows a former doorway indicating earlier range on site of C18 addition. Attic floor apparently inserted. Unmoulded, unbraced crown post roof.
