Description

TM 07 SW WALSHAM LE WILLOWS CRANMER GREEN 3/41 Green Farmhouse 15/11/54 GV II Former farmhouse. C16 and C17. Timber-framed and rendered; old plaintiles. 2 storeys, part with attics; L-shaped form. Boxed-in eaves. An internal chimney-stack in Tudor brick has 3 short attached hexagonal shafts with corbelled heads on a rectangular base; a fine stepped stack set externally on the left has 3 octagonal shafts with moulded caps and bases on a high rectangular base faced with 2 bands of diaper-patterned tiles (cf. similar decoration at Crownland Hall, Item 3/43). Mainly 2-light and 3-light casement windows: on the upper floor with a single horizontal bar to lights, on the left ground floor, one old window with transome and glazing bars. One C17 3- light ovolo-moulded mullioned window on the upper floor, and a repaired original 3-light diamond-mullioned window on the ground floor. 2 matching entrances (the house was formerly divided into 2) with moulded surrounds and bracketed flat pediments; mid C20 doors, one fully and one half-glazed. The central 3 bays form the early C16 core of the house, a 2-cell end chimney type with cross-entry and 2 service rooms. On the ground floor, the end wall of the service rooms has been removed, but housings for 2 4-light diamond mullioned windows remain. Good plain framing throughout, but roof a mid C20 replacement. Long arched braces removed from the truss above the hall chamber, but cambered tie retains mortice-holes for the queenposts of the original roof. On the left, a C17 wing which extends to the rear, but was formerly gabled on the front also; divided into 2 rooms on each floor and in attics. On the ground floor, an ovolo moulded main beam and widely-spaced narrow joists; on the upper floor, fireplace with a moulded brick arch; roof to-part with 2 rows of unstepped'butt purlins, remainder C20 renewed in line with the front. Some cut-down sections of carved bargeboarding, reused in a later internal partition, may come from the missing front gable. Late C16/early C17 parlour end on right, probably added in conjunction with the present internal stack; timbers mainly covered; a 4-light original window on the rear wall with chamfered mullions; repaired roof with clasped purlins and windbraces.
