Description
WETHERINGSETT-CUM-BROCKFORD PITMAN'S CORNER
TM 16 NW
3/132 North End & South End,
3.5.77 Low Barn Cottages
(formerly listed as
Lower Barn Cottages)
-- II
Former farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. C15, extended to south in C17 to form a
single long range. Renovated mid C20. Timber framed and rendered, pantiled
roof. 2 storeys. 5 windows, mid C20 2-light casements with a single
horizontal glazing bar to each light. 2 mid C20 doorways with boarded doors
and gabled hoods. Internal stack has rebuilt plain axial shaft. Later stack
against south gable end. Interior. Core comprises a C15 house with 2-bay
former open hall. Partition wall between the 2 dwellings incorporates open
truss: arched-braced cambered tie beam with peg for crown-post; roof not
accessible but assumed to be intact. Some C15 studding, front wallplate shows
evidence for diamond-mullioned hall window. Mid C16 inserted floor: fine
bridging beam with multiple roll mouldings, carried down onto the head of each
wallpost; the joists are concealed. Inserted stack, probably contemporary
with floor, has blocked back-to-back fireplaces with roll-moulded lintols, one
mutilated. Much of the remainder of the structure is concealed. Interior of
South End not examined.
