Description

MENDLESHAM TM 16 SW 5/33 Whitings Farmhouse -- II Former farmhouse. C15 with C16-C17 alterations; later C17 in-line addition to right. Timber framed and plastered. Roof thatched to front and pantiled to rear. Core comprises a former open hall house, probably of 3-cell form. 1½ storeys. Various windows, mainly casements. One sash window with glazing bars to hall. Slatted windows to extreme right. One dormer. 2 boarded doors. Stack has white brick shaft, partly rendered, set just to rear of roof ridge. Interior. C15 studding shows evidence for diamond-mullioned windows. One tension brace visible in rear wall. Any open truss removed and the massive posts carrying it cut back flush with wall. Blocked front cross-entry doorway with 4-centred arch. Remains of similar doorway in service partition and another re-positioned against stack. Substantial plain joists in service end. Inserted hall ceiling has cased bridging beam and closely-set heavy plain joists. Lintol over hall fireplace is probably C17. Roof timbers mostly concealed; a few sooted rafters visible behind stack. Later end, latterly used as a dairy, has plain full-height studding and plain joists set flat. This end becoming derelict at time of survey (September 1987). Listing NGR: TM1025264208
