Description
NEEDHAM MARKET STOWMARKET ROAD
TM 05 NE
1/143 Stable 20 metres north east of
Hill House
9.12.55 (Formerly listed with Hill
House and barn)
GV II
Stable with granary above, mid C17. 2 storeys. Red brick in English Bond,
the bricks unusually thick for date; a band of moulded brick at 1st floor.
Dutch gables at either end, rebuilt in C19, and possibly copying the original
design. Plain tiled roof, one face renewed in concrete tiles. Two original
1st storey windows have wooden frames and ovolo-moulded mullions, formerly with
leaded glazing. On the garden elevation the windows are identical but blind,
a brick wall behind the mullions being rendered and painted to simulate leaded
glazing - an arrangement which may be original. An original stable door with
heavy frame. Above it is an external door to the granary with remains of a
wooden platform and hoist, all of which may be a C19 alteration.
