Description

DENHAM TM 17 SE Denham Hall 4/28 II Manor farmhouse. C16-C17, in 2 phases, forming double-pile plan. Later alterations especially of mid C19. Timber framed, the facade cased in mid C19 white brick; the remainder is roughcast-rendered. Slated roof to front, the 3 other slopes pantiled. 2 storeys with attic to rear range. Symmetrical 3-bay facade, the bays divided by pilaster strips; 2 brick courses project at first floor level. Large casements windows, probably ante-dating the brickwork. C19 6-panel entrance door, the upper 2 panels glazed. Regency-style open timber porch with swept roof. All openings have splayed reveals and brick hoodmoulds. Gable stacks in red brick. The right gable end has a doorway with strapwork-enriched pilasters and an entablature, now enclosed by a small gabled porch. Interior considerably altered, probably in C18 as well as C19, with none of the timbers visible in the front range. Rear range is mid C16: at the left end a former diary has a 2-bay ceiling with solid arched braces to the bridging beam (one missing) and heavy plain joists. Some of the frame can be seen in the rooms above. This range has a queen-post roof. Front range has a closed-string well stair with stick balusters. Complete encircling medieval moat.
