TL 85 NW HAWSTEAD PLACE FARM 4/68 Barn, 60 metres south of Place Farmhouse 14.7.55 (Formerly listed as stable with Hawstead Place under General) G.V. II Barn, C15. 3 bays, 1 aisle on south side. Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Asbestos sheeted roof. Crown-post roof; square crownposts with spreading bases, arch-braces up to collar-purlin and rising braces from tie-beam to post- head. Slightly cambered tie-beam with massive arch-braces. Aisle tie-beams jowled at junction with arcade-posts; reversed assembly at the eaves. Passing- braces up from cill-beam to back of arcade-post head. Main doorway at east end bay (there were probably at least 2 further bays at the east end until C16/C17). Roof originally hipped at the west end and converted C17 to gable with short clasped purlins. A section of early rendering on the north wall, now within the adjoining barn, has a pargetted motif in high relief. The size and quality of the original framing members are exceptionally high.
