Description

TL 85 NW WHEPSTEAD BROCKLEY ROAD 4/121 Whepstead Hall II House, formerly manor house; c.1500, with C17 alterations. Hall range with 2 cross-wings; 2 storeys. Timber-framed and rendered with scratched oblong panels. Plaintiled roof with 1 axial and 2 external chimneys of red brick, partly rendered. Mid C20 small-pane casements and 6-panelled entrance door. A complex house of several periods: the left-hand parlour cross-wing C15 or earlier, with coupled rafter roof, each couple having had double collars; the right-hand service cross-wing c.1500, with close-studding and coupled-rafter roof (this wing was extended forwards C17 to form a symmetrical H-plan); the central hall range rebuilt C17, with axial chimney and clasped purlin roof. A limestone fireplace in the parlour with strapwork-carved overmantel and central achievement; late C16, or a late C19 copy. The house altered and extended to rear mid C20. Listing NGR: TL8325058190
