Description
The building plot had previously been the site of a warehouse and the ground surface had been terraced into the slope removing about 1.2m of soil from the eastern side of the plot. The trenches at this end were excavated from an already truncated ground level. At the western end of the plot there was a deposit of 19th-20th century debris associated with the demolition of the warehouse. This appeared universally at the top of the trench sections at the western end of the foundations. Below this was a series of pits. The subsoil was very clean, soft sand with bands of river gravels and it seems probable that the pits were dug furing the late medieval period (S1).
