Description

Evaluation trenching at the site of the former Cranfields Mill on College Street, Ipswich revealed a cellar, part of a large and well constructed medieval stone building. It was largely rebuilt during the 16th century and demolished and the cellar infilled during the late 18th/early19th century. Documentary evidence has shown that this is the site of Bigod's Quay and belonged to the foremost ofIpswich's medieval noble families. The medieval and early post-medieval building evidence overlay earlier stratified deposits which produced Late Saxon Thetford-type ware and demonstrates that a rich sequence of archaeological deposits survives within this area.
