Description
Five trial trenches were excavated in advance of proposed residential redevelopment of the site for ten residential dwellings with garages and improved access, revealing a canine burial, three undated ditches and a posthole in the northern part of the site. A layer of topsoil was seen in Trench 1 and in limited areas in Trenches 4 and 5. It was a dark greying brwon sandy silt with occasional rounded pebbles, frags of CBM and gravel, and was seen up to 0.55m in depth below the ground surface. The topsoil directly overlay the natural. The majority of the site was comprising various modern farm yard surfaces consisting of tarmac and concrete, and their associated preparation layers. This directly overlay the natureal substrate. It varied between 0.17m-0.38m below the ground surface (S1).
