An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of a residential development. A single 10m trench was excavated across the footprint of the proposed structure. The natural subsoil lay at a depth of 0.3m at the southern end. However, throughout the greater majority of the trench’s length the natural subsoil lay at a depth of 1.4m below an overburden of dark sandy soil. This was seen as a possible deliberate extension of a plateau of higher ground or the backfilling of a small scale gravel extraction pit.
