Description

A visit was made to the site to record a test pit prior to the construction of a conservatory and patio area at the rear of 35 Guildhall Street. The trench measured 1.4mx0.9m and was up to 0.6m deep. The trench was entirely hand dug, including the removal of 0.18m of patio surface and Type 1 aggregate and the existing patio surface. Excavation of the test pit revealed two soil layers. The first deposit was 0.42m thick and consisted of firm dark grey silt, interspersed with loose rubble, with inclusions of chalk lumps and 19th century brick fragments. Below was the second layer made up of light grey silt with inclusions of charcoal flecks and an amorphous patch of grey-orange clay. There was no evidence of archaeological deposits pre-dating the post-medieval period. They layers revealed indicate a typical build-up of post-medieval material. However, any construction below 0.6m may reveal archaeological features (S1).
