Description

Archaeological trial trench evaluation carried out on land at Westgate House in advance of the construction of residential dwellings with associated access and landscaping. 3 trenches were excavated. Trench 1 was located close to the northern boundary of the site, top layer was Tarmac and Reinforced Concrete c 0.3m deep, on top of made ground between 0.42-0.7m deep above natural chalk between 0.72-0.95m+. Trench 2 was located in the west of the site in an area currently forming a walled garden. Topsoil was at a depth of 0.1m, above Garden soil between 0.65-0.74m deep, above Natural Chalk which was at a level c0.75-0.84m+. Trench 3 was located in the south of the site, topsoil was c0.18-0.22m deep, above made ground c0.11m-0.2m deep, above garden soil 0.78m-0.94m deep, above Natural Chalk c1.2m+ (S1).
