Description
Trial trenching was carried out across the site of the proposed Bus Station development. All four trenches showed 20th century rubbish deposited generally over the top 50cm of the site. The subsoil was a bright orange sand and gravel over which, in places were softer orange and yellow sands, also natural. The rear of the site had been comprehensively destroyed by post-medieval buildings, and the trenches in the from (eastern) half of the site appeared to demonstrate that the site had been levelled involving a combination of truncation and overburden. Undisturbed subsoil survived in the northern half of the site under c.1.6m of post-medieval garden soils and modern deposits. Little archaeology was revealed (S1).
