Description

Two evaluation trenches were excavated (to the rear of 85-87 High Street and on vacant land near the end of Eden Road). These trenches were 6.5m and 10.5m long respectively, and up to 0.7m deep. The trench to the rear of 85-87 High Street revealed highly disturbed domestic garden soils with three large modern features cut though the natural deposits, while the trench off Eden Road revealed two further modern features, though a significant amount of disturbance was apparent with no intact topsoil or undisturbed subsoil present. No finds or features of archaeological interest were observed and no further archaeological fieldwork is recommended as being necessary. The Level 2 building recording survey has identified an interesting example of mid-19th century vernacular architecture with clay lump wall construction and further recording during the demolition of 85-87 High Street, is recommended
