Description

Trial trench evaluation at The Chestnuts, Stock Corner, as part of a scheme of pre-planning archaeological works in advance of a housing development. 5 trenches were located systematically and were between 0.34m-0.61m deep. 4 of the trenches had a topsoil layer comprising of loose, dark grey-brown, silty sand 0.36m deep and represents garden soil. Beneath was natural, comprising of very loose, light yellow-brown or light yellow-white, firm sandy silt, with occassional small chalk inclusions and was present from a min depth of 0.28m. One of the trenches was redeposited soil which overlay a buried soil layer of loose, dark grey-brown silty sand up to 0.33m thich and max depth 0.63m (S1).
