Description
The first phase of evaluation trenching was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of sports pitches and associated structures on the site. A total of 58 trenches were positioned across the site to sample all areas of the proposed development area. Care was taken to avoid trenching across known footpaths in the area and a gas main that crossed the northern field. Prior to the fieldwalking being undertaken there had been heavy rainfall which led to frequent collapsing of the sides of the deeper trenches. Finds and features of Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman date were encountered (S1).
