Description
Negative evaluation on the site of a proposed new forge. At the time of the evaluation the footing trenches for the new building had already been dug and the concrete poured. The evaluation trench was inserted diagionally across the central area of the building, where pre-exisitng soil levels were still intact. A single trench 1.8m wide x 10.4m long was inserted into the site using a JCB with a toothless ditching bucket. Topsoil, consisting of brown loam with occasional fragments of 20th century debris, was consistently found at 0.23m across the site. Chalk natural was found at 0.34m in the western 5.2m of the trench under a 0.1m deep of grey silty gravel. At 5.2m from the western end of the trench the chalk was replaced by a deposit of dense grey silt with orange chalk sand patches throughout, which came down onto a layer of orange silty sand, which was still continuing down at 1.2m below ground level. The grey silty gravel seen under topsoil appeared to drop at 5.2.
