Description

A trial trench evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed redevelopment of an industrial plot. Ten trenches were excavated to a depth of 0.60-1.08m. At the top of the stratigraphic sequence in all the trenches was a demolition layer to a depth of 0.48m. Beneath this layer was a levelling layer to a depth of 0.7m. Beneath this layer in trenches 2,4-10 was the former agricultural subsoil which was a dark brown-black compact silty clay present to a depth of 0.93m. This overlay the natural geology consisting of a light yellow-orange, very compact silty clay. Beneath the levelling layer in trench 1 was the demolition layer at 0.7m. Trench 3 and 4 had a layer of contaminated subsoil which represents a former agricultural subsoil (S1).
