Description
Evaluation trenching for a small residential development 300m south-west of the historic core town did not reveal any features except for a pit of 20th century date and the upcast spoil did not contain any fins of pre 1900 date. 6 trenches were excavated to a depth of 0.3m-0.5m with 0.2m-0.35m topsoil above 0.05m-0.2m of mid brown clay subsoil. The natural glaciofluvial deposit at the site was pale orangey brown chalky clay with flints in the southern hald and orange sandy clay with flints in the northern half (S1).
