Description
Evaluation trenching for a small residential development in the centre of Gazeley village did not reveal any features except a filled-in cellar and a pit both of later 19th/20th century date, though two sherds of medieval pottery were recovered at stray finds. 6 trenches were excavated which veried in depth between 0.7m and 1m. Topsoil was 0.35m-0.4m thick above 0.35m-0.6m of mid brown sandy subsoil. The natural drift geological deposit at the site varied between prange silty sand with pockets of degraded chalk over much of the sit and degraded chalk with pockets of orange silty sand on the eastern side (S1).
