Description

A report commissioned by English Heritage to inform its Post-1939 Listing Programme. The initial brief was to trace the historical development of certain categories of road transport building between 1939-1970 by means of desk-top research, including: petrol filling stations; repair and maintenance garages; motor-car showrooms; motorway service stations; multi-storey car parks; bus garages and bus stations. This is not a comprehensive record, no time for fieldwork, planning and conservation officers at conty level were written to for information this revealed that many sites which had not appeared in the main published sources therefore possibly not all buildings were identified in this study (S1).
