Description
On 20th December 2021, an archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd of land adjacent to 8 Loraine Way, Bramford, Suffolk. The evaluation, which was commissioned by Kingsfleet Wealth, acting through Parker Planning Services Ltd., their archaeological consultant, was carried out to meet the requirements of conditions that had been attached to planning consent by Babergh & Mid Suffolk Councils for the construction of a commercial premises on the site. The evaluation consisted of the excavation of two 15m trial trenches.
The evaluation established that the site had been extensively disturbed by modern activity, probably related to the demolition of cottages and other structures that once occupied the site and the upgrade of the junction of the B1113 and Somersham Road in the latter half of the 20th century. Below the redeposited topsoil was a thick layer of made-ground, consisting of multiple layers of redeposited natural clay, gravel, tarmac, soil, ash and refuse. Sondages demonstrated that the made-ground was in excess of 1.4m thick. No in situ remains of the former buildings were encountered in the trenches.
