Description
2018-2019: Archaeological monitoring of re-ordering works inside the church identified evidence of earlier structural remnants of the church. Works involved removal of existing pew platforms and lowering of existing ground levels and cutting service trenches. Three areas of pews were removed: Area A in the north aisle measuring 3.70m x 2.00m, Area B in the central area measuring 5.30m x 4.20m, and Area C in the southern nave measuring 5.40m x 1.50m. Generally, the groundworks were to an approximate depth of 0.15m. Once the fetaures and deposits revealed by the groundworks had been archaeologically recorded, geotextile membrane was laid over the cleaned and stripped areas in order to protect and define any archaeological fetaures before the new sub-base was laid.
