Description
2007: As part of the new interpretation of the castle site including its natural history to coincide with renovation and repairs. It was requested that some of the large oaks surrounding the Mere be analaysed. They were to be aged as closely as possible to see if they might date from the late 17th or early 18th century when it is known trees were planted to replace earlier trees that had died. Three of the alrger oak trees were chosen, one from the east side of the Mere, and two from the west. The circumference at approximately 1.2m above ground level was measured, and two cores were taken from each tree using a swedish increment borer.
