Description
An archaeological trial trenching evaluation was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd on the proposed site of Phase 1 of the North of Lowestoft Garden Village, in Corton,
Lowestoft, Suffolk. The trial trenching included the excavation and recording of 42no. 30m by 2m trenches. The trial trenching took place between the 21st August and 1st September, 2023, and between the 16th and 18th October 2023.
The stratigraphy of the Site was variable across the area. Geological substrata encountered across the site (suffixed -03 for each trench) comprised silty and sandy clays which were pale to mid-yellowish greyish browns with occasional mid-reddish brown mottling. This was sealed by subsoil (suffixed -02 for each trench), which were present, typically comprised of a mid-dark yellowish grey brown clayey silt with occasional sub-angular flint inclusions measuring between 0.04m to 0.20m thick.Overlying the subsoil was topsoil (suffixed -01 for each trench) comprising loose, midgreyish brown and dark greyish brown silty sand with infrequent stone inclusions. The topsoil ranged in depth from 0.24m to 0.78m in depth.
