Site Event/Activity record ESF30416 - Evaluation - Land at Victoria Mill Road, Framlingham

A trenched archaeological evaluation of land at Victoria Mill Road, Framlingham, Suffolk. A total of twenty-four trenches were excavated. A pit, dating from its included ceramic assemblage to the Early-Middle Bronze Age, was recorded in Trench 4 located adjacent Victoria Mill Road. Subsequently, SCCAS requested that an area measuring c.12m x 12m, centred on the pit, was stripped to the level of the natural subsoil but no further features were found to be present. No other features or artefacts were recovered during the course of the evaluation. The overburden was relatively consistent across the field, comprising a heavy dark topsoil, that measured c.0.35m in thickness which overlay a subsoil of pale brown, locally slightly sandy, clay. The subsoil varied in thickness between 0.02m up to a maximum of around 0.6m, overlying the naturally occurring geological substrate, a pale orange clay with patches of grey clay containing small flecks of chalk, becoming completely grey clay towards the south and east sides of the site.
